Why APL for OTR Trucking

Six OTR Standards That Atlantic Pacific Lines Applies to Every Load

Every standard below is enforced before load tender, not discovered as a problem after the truck has already departed.

Carrier Safety

FMCSA Verification Before Every Load Tender. APL verifies USDOT number, MC operating authority, safety rating, insurance certificate, and CSA BASIC scores before tendering any load. Carriers with Conditional or Unsatisfactory ratings, open out-of-service orders, or expired insurance are excluded from every tender. Verification is repeated every 30 days for all carriers in active rotation. Satisfactory safety rating required.

Cost Clarity

Every Accessorial Disclosed Before You Book. APL captures origin and destination details including dock height, liftgate need, commercial versus residential classification, and inside delivery requirement during quote intake. Every applicable accessorial is included in the initial rate. The invoice after delivery contains no charges that were not visible before the booking was confirmed. No post-delivery invoice revisions.

Tracking

GPS Monitoring With Deviation Alerts on All FTL. All FTL moves are tracked with minimum 4-hour GPS position updates. Time-sensitive or high-value loads are configured with 30-minute deviation alerts. GPS records are retained for 90 days on every load and are available immediately for Carmack Amendment freight claim support if loss or damage occurs at delivery. 90-day GPS record retention.

Equipment

Specialized Equipment Confirmed Before Dispatch. APL sources flatbed trailers for over-dimensional or top-loaded cargo, step-deck and RGN for oversize equipment, and heavy haul carriers for loads requiring state oversize and overweight permits. OSOW permit packages are arranged before the truck departs. The right equipment is confirmed at dispatch, not improvised at pickup when a problem is first discovered. OSOW permits before truck rolls.

Expedited

Team Driver for Coast-to-Coast Time-Critical Loads. Team driver service uses two alternating drivers to maintain continuous operation, delivering coast-to-coast FTL freight in 52 to 60 hours compared to multiple relay days with a solo driver. Atlantic Pacific Lines arranges team service for hard delivery deadline loads and for high-value cargo where extended terminal or rest stop dwell increases exposure. 52 to 60 hours coast-to-coast.

Specialist Cargo

HAZMAT OTR With CDL Endorsement and Route Compliance. Domestic HAZMAT transport requires HAZMAT-endorsed CDL, properly placarded vehicles, DG shipping papers in the cab, and route compliance with state restrictions by DG class. Atlantic Pacific Lines sources HAZMAT-certified OTR carriers with current endorsements and advises on routing requirements specific to your commodity and destination state before dispatch. Route-compliant HAZMAT dispatch.

What equipment types does Atlantic Pacific Lines provide for OTR shipments? +
APL's carrier network includes dry van 53ft trailers for standard freight, flatbed trailers for over-dimensional or top-loaded cargo, step-deck and RGN trailers for oversize equipment requiring permitted moves, reefer trailers for temperature-sensitive domestic freight, and heavy haul carriers for loads requiring state oversize and overweight permits. Team driver service is available for time-critical expedited loads.
How does Atlantic Pacific Lines verify OTR carrier safety? +
APL verifies every carrier in the FMCSA SAFER database before tendering any load: active USDOT number and MC operating authority, Satisfactory safety rating, current insurance certificate above minimum coverage thresholds, and CSA BASIC scores below intervention levels. Carriers with Conditional or Unsatisfactory ratings or open out-of-service orders are excluded. Carriers in active rotation are re-verified every 30 days.
What accessorial charges apply to OTR shipments and how does APL handle them? +
Common OTR accessorials include liftgate at delivery, limited access surcharge, residential delivery, detention after free time, layover when consignee cannot receive, and redelivery. Atlantic Pacific Lines captures origin and destination characteristics at quoting and includes all applicable accessorials in the initial rate. The invoice after delivery contains no charges that were not disclosed before the booking was confirmed.
What is the Carmack Amendment and how does APL support a freight claim? +
The Carmack Amendment (49 U.S.C. 14706) governs domestic carrier liability for freight loss and damage. Establishing a claim requires proof of delivery to the carrier in good condition and arrival at destination in damaged or short condition. Atlantic Pacific Lines retains GPS tracking records and ePOD for 90 days on all FTL loads and provides both immediately for freight claim documentation if loss or damage occurs.
Can Atlantic Pacific Lines handle HAZMAT over-the-road shipments? +
Yes. Domestic HAZMAT OTR requires HAZMAT-endorsed CDL, properly placarded vehicles, DG shipping papers in the cab, and route compliance with state-specific tunnel and highway restrictions by DG class. Atlantic Pacific Lines sources HAZMAT-certified carriers with current endorsement and confirms routing requirements for your commodity before any dispatch is confirmed.
What is the difference between FTL and LTL trucking and when does each make sense? +
Full Truckload means your shipment occupies an entire trailer and moves directly from origin to destination without stops or co-loading with other shippers. Less than Truckload consolidates your freight with other shippers in a shared trailer, with multiple stops and terminal handling along the route. FTL is faster, more secure, and cost-effective for shipments filling more than approximately 10 to 12 pallets or 20,000 to 24,000 pounds. LTL is appropriate for smaller shipments where speed and exclusivity are less critical than cost. Atlantic Pacific Lines provides both, with FMCSA-verified carriers and full accessorial disclosure before quoting on either mode.
What is the Carmack Amendment, and how does it affect domestic freight claims? +
The Carmack Amendment (49 U.S.C. 14706) is the federal statute governing motor carrier liability for loss and damage to domestic freight shipments in the United States. Under Carmack, a shipper establishes a prima facie cargo claim by proving three elements: that the cargo was delivered to the carrier in good condition at origin, that it arrived at destination in damaged or short condition, and the amount of resulting damages. The carrier then bears the burden of proving an applicable defense such as act of God, act of the shipper, or inherent vice of the commodity. Carrier liability is not automatic and requires evidence preservation at delivery, specifically notation on the delivery receipt for visible damage and prompt reporting for concealed damage. Atlantic Pacific Lines retains GPS tracking data and electronic proof of delivery for 90 days on all FTL shipments to support claim documentation when needed.
